License Requirements

Requirements can change at any time and these are guidelines to the best of our knowledge. To apply for a licence yourself please contact your local DEFRA office or if you would like us to arrange this the VRS.

As regulations change all the time it is best to contact the relevant offices for import or export of canine semen.

Export:
Export of frozen semen from the UK to Australia

  • On the basis of a written declaration (signed and dated) by the owner the dog has been continuously resident in the UK for the six month prior to collection or is re-examined by the vet not less than 21 days after collection.
  • Being within 30 days prior to collection a blood sample must be taken and send to the Weybridge Government Laboratory to be tested for Brucella canis (SAT) with a negative result.
  • Being within 30 days prior to collection a blood sample must be taken and send to the Weybridge Government Laboratory to be tested for Leptospira interrogans var. canicola (serum agglutination) with:
  • a.) a negative result (less than 50% agglutination at 1:100)
  • b.) a positive result of not more than 1:400 and a re-test 14 days or more after the first test. The second test must not show an increase in titre above the first test.
  • All test results must be handed in as originals to travel with the shipment.

Export of frozen semen to New Zealand
On the basis of a written declaration (signed and dated) by the owner the dog has been continuously resident in the UK for the six month prior to collection and the dog has not been vaccinated against rabies with a live vaccine in the last 6 months and the dog is not a Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Brazilian Fila or Dogo Argentino.

Being within 3- 6 weeks after the collection a blood sample must be taken and send to the Weybridge Government Laboratory to be tested for Brucella canis (SAT) with a negative result.
The dog must be re-examined by the vet 3-6 weeks after the collection.
All test results must be handed in as originals to travel with the shipment.

Export of frozen semen to the USA and Canada
There are no health requirements for export to these countries. Export of frozen semen to the Continent except Sweden.
There are no health requirements for export to these countries.
For any other destinations individual applications will have to be made to DEFRA.

‘Pet passported’ stud dogs:
The semen can then ‘travel on the passport’. Shipment from most countries in Europe takes 24h. You do require an import licence from DEFRA.
